It is small but beautiful natural place located on the Sahyadri mountain ranges in the Raigad district of Maharashtra state. Matheran is about 120 kilometres away from Pune but just 90 kilometres from metro city Mumbai thus quite popular destination for Mumbaikars. It serves both as a hill station in summer while a green destination in monsoon.Matheran is a place that has no pollution due to restriction of vehicles in the region. No four wheelers or two wheelers are allowed here and the local medium of transportation is either horses or cycle rickshaws (hand pulled rickshaws). Dasturi Naka is the point beyond which no vehicles are allowed to go. Initially it seems like you have come up to a place of history but it is amazing to see a place totally free from vehicles. The only vehicle allowed here is an ambulance of Municipal hospital. I loved this place because this is the first time I have been to a place that is actually pollution free. There are hundreds of horses and ponies you can see here. Another thing is its green dense forest that is a treat to nature lovers. The trees are huge in height and dense. There are some old bungalows you can see while roaming around in the woods. I was really fascinated with these houses. They are old but beautiful architectural example of British time. These can be the perfect location for horror movie shoots as these bungalows are standing alone in the dense woods on quite a good distance from other bungalows and the main market. The routes in the forest are so confusing that if you do not have a guide with you it would be difficult to find the way out of it. We hired two horses to roam around and he was telling us the stories of wild animals that attacked their horses in night. It was horrifying as we were in the middle of the forest and it was getting dark. There were no lights in the forest. We had no other option except relying on our young guide. If you go during monsoon you will find several waterfalls and lush greenery around but the routes get so slippery that you must be very careful while walking, trekking or horse riding. The small gauge train that runs from Neral the bottom town to Matheran does not operate during rainy season so you may miss that attraction. It takes about 2 to 2 and a half hour to cover the scenic distance of 21 kilometres through the dense forest. It is usually closed from July to October due to heavy rains and land sliding risks. In the year 1907 this hill railway which covers approximately 12 miles was built by Sir Adamjee Peerbhoy. After monsoon it is good to visit too as the greenery will still be there and you may enjoy the train ride that goes through the spectacular dense woods. If we go through the history of this place then we find that this place was discovered in May 1850 by Hugh Poyntz Mallet who was a district collector of Thane district. As usual British were always in search of cool hill stations where they can relax during summers that were too hot for them in India. Later on the Governor of Bombay, Lord Elphinstone laid the foundations to turn this place into a hill station. Today it is one of the most popular eco sensitive hill stations in the Maharashtra state. It sees thousands of visitors every year. There are actually total thirty eight viewpoints in Matheran like in any other hill station. If you are very good at trekking and long walking you can try it but if get tired soon do hire a horse for going to these points that are at a good distance from each other. You get free guide with your horse. They charge good amount depending upon the season as in off season rates are a bit low but during season time you cannot even bargain. These points include Panorama point, Louisa point, One tree hill, Eco point, Cathedral Rock, Monkey point, Garbett Point, Porcupine Point, Heart Point, Rambaug Point, Charlotte Lake, etc. The Charlotte Lake is the main source of drinking water in Matheran located at just one kilometre from the main market. The Panorama point is famous for its 360 degree wonderful clear view of surroundings. You can watch close sun rise and sunset from here if you do not want to go to those points. You can get an outstanding view of Prabalgad Fort from the Louisa Point. Like this all other points do have some special views. I was more interested in enjoying the peaceful and pollution free nature rather covering each and every point while visiting such hill stations. I would rather make my own points to visit and explore.Matheran is also famous for its medicinal plants and herbs that are grown here. Another interesting fact is there are lots of monkeys here that you need to be careful of as they welcome you from the car parking and won’t leave you alone in your resort too. You can find Bonnet Macaques as well as Hanuman Langurs here.AccommodationThere are lots and lots of accommodations available ranging from economy to extra luxurious resorts with pool and other facilities. Charges are quite high due to the demand of place. In peak season it is difficult to find a budget accommodation.FoodAll variety of food is available here. Usually the accommodation is inclusive of food. How to reach Matheran? You can catch train from Pune station to Karjat or Neral as Karjat is the nearest train junction for Matheran.Ruchi Mahajanзайм на карту без отказов круглосуточновзять кредит онлайн

Matheran is a unique place to visit on weekends.
