It has many forts of ancient times that are still capable of telling their history with pride. These attractive structures are spread in and around the city of Pune for a long time just to witness superb architecture, hard work and intelligence of people of that time and various attacks they went through. Most of them are in ruins now but still looks inviting as all of them are situated at a good height with natural surroundings. Karnala fort is one of these special forts comes under the district of Raigad in the state of Maharashtra. This thumb shaped steep fort is also called Funnel hill. It is 120 kilometer from Pune and approximately 13 kilometer from Panvel.It is a hill fort mainly made up of stone as any other fort in the region situated at a height of 439 meter that is 1440 ft above the sea level. \u00a0It is almost in ruins today. Just some major features are seen here and there apart from the big wall and the entrance door. It actually has two parts one at a higher level and the other at the lower level. There is a 125 feet high basalt pillar known as Pandu\u2019s tower situated in centre of higher portion used as a watch tower. There is a water reservoir in the fort which provides fresh water throughout the area. The Karnala fort was of strategic importance as it was built on the main trade route of surrounding areas to overlook the borpass that connected Konkan coast from Vidarbha. Rajmachi and Prabalgad can be seen from top of the fort. Currently comes under the control of Government of India that made it a protected area because a bird sanctuary lies in the bottom of the hill. This place is open for public visiting all trough the year.<strong>Various rulers who captured the Karnala fort from its inception till today<\/strong>Karnala fort has seen many rulers and their invasion to capture the fort over the years. The Karnala fort is built on which date is not known but the chain of rulers who owned the fort during different times is as under:Devagiri Yadavs (1248 to 1318) &gt;the Tughlaq Rulers (1318 to 1347) &gt; the Gujarat Sultanate (till 1540) &gt; Nizam Shah of Ahemednagar (from 1540) &gt; Gujarat Sultanate took over with the help of Portuguese &gt; Nizam Shah &gt; Portuguese &gt; Nizam Shah with condition of paying Rs. 17,500 (5000 gold pardoas) &gt; Shivaji Maharaja (1670 \u2013 1680) &gt; Aurangzeb (1680) &gt; Mughals \u00a0&gt; (Peshwas) Killedar Anantrao &gt; British East India Company (from 1818) &gt; Government of India (today)It is really beautiful sight on the top as the sea coast line is visible from here. The trekking is difficult but thrilling. In monsoon the scenery is just magnificent as you can see clouds touching the top and if you are on top then you can take bath in clouds too. The path way to climb becomes a bit green and pink begonias do the magic to make your climb worth enjoying.<strong>Warning:<\/strong>Beware of bees as there are many beehives on the top. These can be dangerous if disturbed or trying to come closer.<strong>Special attraction:<\/strong>There is bird sanctuary at a height of 25 meters from sea level. In the year 1968 \u2013 69 government of maharashtra announced a 4.5 square kilometer area in this region for bird sanctuary to make it a natural habitat of many species of birds. \u00a0This place is perfect for a bird lover as the Karnala bird sanctuary is a natural home for more than 150 species of birds like Sunbirds, Orioles, Babblers, Drogues, Red Vented Bulbul, Horn Bill, Owl, Ashy Rain War Blur, Paradise Fly Catcher, Robin Mc Pie, etc. Apart from birds if you are fortunate enough then can sight deer herds and sometimes panther (very rare). \u00a0Troops of monkeys are commonly found here.Remember to take Binoculars with you while visiting this place apart from a good quality camera.<strong>Best time to visit:<\/strong>Monsoon and winter are best. One should avoid hot summer from March to June.<strong>Accommodation:<\/strong>For overnight stay MTDC has arrangements for tents on rental basis. Few rooms are also available to stay in the foothills but not very luxurious.
