In spite of that India has shown tremendous growth as compared to other developing countries in the world. But there are some basic problems of almost all major cities like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bharatestates.com\/pune\/real-estate\">Pune<\/a> needs attention and solution as soon as possible so as to maintain the actual growth in terms of basic development. The traffic problem in city like Pune is increasing with every passing day. Whenever we talk about Pune\u2019s traffic we hear words like disgusting, chaotic, unsafe, infamous, etc. The fatality rate is one person a day or 10 to 15 a week which is very high. Thanks to very unorganised, undisciplined traffic of city with zero traffic sense in the population. Every time we cross the city we find ourselves standing frustrated in traffic congestion and criticizing the government. Is it fair to blame government for everything? I agree up to some extent with this but we are also responsible for this situation somehow.\u00a0 Let us analyse the problem and brainstorm some practical short term and long term solutions for the problem.<strong>The probable causes of traffic congestion or bad traffic in Pune are as under:<\/strong>1. Bad condition of city roads.2. Potholes here and there on the city roads.3. Insufficient existing parking infrastructure in the city.4. Encroachment on footpaths that contributes in poor discipline in pedestrians who are forced to use roads to walk.5. Lack of traffic rules education among population. Sometimes highly qualified professional like engineers and doctors behave like illiterates on the roads.6. Lack of strict traffic police system that can punish rule breakers on the roads.7. Heavy vehicles transit into city slows down the traffic and increases jam like situations quite often.8. Auto drivers are the curse in the city as they dominate the roads and take dangerous cuts to go ahead and risks the lives of their passengers.9. Most of us think red lights are for street decoration and thus ignoring it is quite common.10. Horns have become substitute to the brakes as I myself have seen many times when the car driver ahead of me needs to push brakes but he pushes horn hard like anything. It just aggravates the situation and sometimes the rider ahead of him may lose control due to loud sound.11. Bad shape of roads and less width in the busiest parts of city invites traffic to congest.12. I think almost all the roads in the city are frequently dug up by government or corporation for some reasons and then it takes a long time to repair them. In some cases they just forget to fill it up inviting accidents. In some places you don\u2019t find even a sign board.13. Frequent rallies, marriage processions, political rallies, visit of a celebrity or politician are some of the very common causes of traffic congestion in India (specially).14. Overtaking from wrong side, taking a short cut, merging in main lane, etc are common sights helping in disturbing traffic of city.15. Not obeying the traffic rules is very common behaviour among population.16. Inadequate public transportation encourages people to use their own vehicles that contribute in increasing volume of vehicles on the roads.17. Fast development of city has pulled huge population from across the nation contributing in increase in traffic.<strong>Most congested locations:\u00a0<\/strong>Usually locations where roads or infrastructure is under-construction are most jam-packed. Even areas near commercial zones of office areas are jammed with traffic especially during morning hours when everybody are in rush to reach office on time. Senapati Bapat Road, Hinjewadi, Hadapsar, Sinhagad Road, Kothrud, Koregaon Park, Pune Station area are mostly crowded.<strong>Suggestions to help curb the traffic problem in Pune:<\/strong>1. Strict rules to be made to regulate the traffic in the city.2. More traffic police should be appointed on the roads\/signals. Some high tech solutions should be used.3. Educating people and the drivers for traffic and parking rules regulations can help a lot. Fifty percent problem can be solved by teaching people the traffic manners like lane discipline, overtaking rules, speed limits, stopping distances, low &amp; high beams of light, zebra crossing meant for pedestrians, how to deal with roundabouts, showing courtesy on roads, red light discipline and free turns, blind spots and other symbols on roads, etc.4. Efficient, effective and quality public transport can help in mass transit and reducing number of vehicles on roads by encouraging people to use it for commuting purpose.5. Frequency of public transport should be increased along with providing quality service with low fare in order to encourage people to use it instead of self vehicles.6. To and fro destinations should be revised as per the requirements.7. Important or busy routes should have more service than other routes.8. Proper parking infrastructure should be provided in the given space so as to minimise vehicles on sides of roads. Optimum utilisation of current available infrastructure might help.9. Malls, multiplexes and corporate offices should provide parking to its customers and employees in their premises so that the roads are not blocked.10. To control the pollution everyone should check their vehicles pollution level time to time.11. Auto drivers should be taught by government authorities to follow traffic rules and speed limits and if found guilty immediately punish them with violation charges on the spot.12. Road widening, removing encroachments and building flyovers, signal less circulars, subways are some of the long term solutions that may solve some percent of problems.13. Removing corruption from system can help in fast work and quality work in building infrastructure.14. Banning people from digging roads or side of roads to make pandals, hanging hoardings or decorating for festive reasons like in other developed countries.15. Maintain road quality by repairing it time to time and after rains is important.16. It is difficult to organise traffic in such a volume but not impossible.17. Using car pool and public transport will help in reducing number of vehicles on roads.18. Building footpaths is necessary to encourage safe walking for pedestrians who rather choose to use two wheelers for short distances.19.\u00a0If only single or a couple is travelling, then they should avoid commuting through 4-wheeler as it occupies much road space. Two-wheeler should be preferable.Let us stop the game of blaming, criticising and complaining but start acting right now by obeying the traffic rules.
