\"BMC\"Mumbai:<\/strong> The Bombay High Court has sent out a notification to the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) stating that it cannot raise property tax without issuing a notice to the owners in this regard. The BMC had hiked property taxes without sending out prior notice to the residents of Girgaum, 11 years before.With the interference of the Bombay High Court, the provisions for raising property tax were re-framed. An official notice has to be sent to the occupier of the building or land before raising the property tax in\u00a0Mumbai<\/a>, within\u00a0BMC’s\u00a0jurisdiction. In case of the owner\u2019s absence, the notice has to be handed over to any of his nearest acquaintance else it should be placed in an obvious region of the property.In 2002, properties in Girgaum<\/a> were told to pay the increased property tax within 15 days of receiving the verbal order. A complaint was launched stating that no written confirmation had been received from the Municipal Corporation in this regard. The issue was taken up in subordinate courts and final moved to the Bombay High Court.The High Court in turn pointed out that if the reasons for revisions are not valid or the hike is implemented without giving an official notification the assessment will stand invalid.
