This small but splendid village is located at the Tansa River banks in Bhivandi city of Thane district in the state of Maharashtra. This place is just 75 kilometres away from Mumbai city while 31 kilometres from Vasai. The place is better known for its magnificent Hindu temple known as Vajreshwari temple which attracts real good number of devotees and tourists alike. The actual name of the temple is Shree Vajreshwari Yogini Devi Mandir. The temple is situated on the Mandagiri hills close to the post office of Vajreshwari village.Initially the village was called Vadvali but later on it is changed to Vajreshwari in order to honour the goddess Vajreshwari who is the main deity of the famous temple Vajreshwari. The place is also known for its several hot springs spread all over the village. In this small village mainly simple Marathi people resides while in the surrounding forests some tribal community also live. This place is naturally blessed and makes a perfect weekend getaway because of the presence of three rivers in its close vicinity. These rivers are Tejsa, Tansa and Surya that adds beauty to the place. There is another fact which may interest you. This village is said to be formed by a volcanic eruption. The temple of Vajreshwari was built in the year 1739 by Chimaji Appa. He was the younger brother and Military commander of Peshwa Baji Rao I. There is a story behind the creation of this temple as well. When regular efforts to defeat Portuguese at the Bassein Fort in Vasai were not resulted in success for three years Chimaji Appa prayed to goddess Vajreshwari if he would be successful in his mission he would build a temple for her. Goddess accepted his prayer and he defeated Portuguese and conquered the Fort. As he promised, he built the temple for the goddess. The architecture of the temple is based on the Bassein Fort. There is a Nagarkhana (drum house) situated at the main entrance of the temple. The surrounding wall is made of thick stone just like a fort. There are fifty two steps to reach the temple from ground. You can also see the golden tortoise symbolizing the incarnation of Lord Vishnu and worshipped as Kurma on the step. There are various legends are attached to this place.

Mention of Vajreshwari village can be found in the holy scriptures of Hindus as a place which is blessed by Lord Rama and Parshuram.

Initially known as Vadali this small town was later called Vajreshwari because of reincarnation of Goddess Vajrayogini (goddess Parvati).

Another reason given by locals for the name of village Vajreshwari is that the goddess swallowed the Vajra (the weapon) of Lord Indra who threw it to the Sage Muni Vashishtha. Thus the goddess known as Vajreshwari and the temple was built in her honour. Thus the place got its name Vajreshwari.

The town of Vajreshwari has many tourists’ attractions. These are as under:

Hot springs – The place is blessed by several hot springs located close to the Vajreshwari Temple within a radius of five kilometres. You may find more than twenty one hot springs in the village and all of them are named after different Hindu gods. For example Chandra, Agni, Rama, Sita, Laxmi, Vayu, Surya, etc.

The Vajreshwari temple – This town is named after this beautiful temple. The shrine is dedicated to goddess Vajreshwari who is said to be the incarnation of goddess Parvati. Situated on the banks of River Tansa the temple is one of the oldest shrine in town and worth paying a visit.

Another place to visit is Shri Gurudev Ashram which was built in 1949 by Swami Muktananda in the honour of his guru. Spread over an area of about seventy acres this place is a spiritual centre in the village.

Close to the Vajreshwari temple is located the famous Akholi Kund which is one of the main hot springs but very rich in sulphar and other minerals. It actually has seven hot springs in it and is situated in a five feet deep tank of cement. It is said that the water of this kund has medicinal properties and thus it can cure many diseases.

There is another shrine in the town known as Parshuram Mandir. It is said that this temple is sanctified by Lord Rama and Parshuram. Nityanand Mandir is also situated in the village. It was the place where Swami Nityananda took Mahasamadhi.

There is a magnificent lake located just three kilometres from Vajreshwari in Pelhar village. The lake is known as Pelhar Lake. The village has a dam known as Pelhar Dam nearby. In the monsoon, there appears a waterfall in the area and the surrounding Tungareshwar mountain ranges turn green. The entire atmosphere becomes absolutely striking and worth exploring.

In the village of Vajreshwari you may not find luxury resorts but there are many small and big hotels to make your stay comfortable. You can get the authentic Maharashtrian as well as south Indian food here at the local food joints. If you feel thirsty at any step of your exploration tour, don’t forget to enjoy the famous sugarcane juice which works as the best energy drink ever.Distance from different places:Mumbai – 75 kilometresThane – 34 kilometresVasai – 31 kilometresRUCHI MAHAJANзайм на карту без отказов круглосуточновзять кредит онлайн

Among the many beautiful places to explore around Mumbai, one cannot miss the natural but religiously significant place called Vajreshwari.
