It had proved highly effective and ‘Gandhigiri’ had been reinvented in the recent years when it has become apparent that there are more ways to solving a problem in a non violent way than intimation and threats.In one of the latest events, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC<\/a>) has used ‘Gandhigiri’ and taken its profits to a whole new level. The civic body has hired music bands to play outside the houses of property tax defaulters. Loud band music can set anybody’s teeth on the edge. Band music all day long can drive them to pay their pending property tax<\/a>.In six days PMC has collected over Rs 8 crore of pending property tax. Hemant Nikam, the head of the property tax department said, “Since the drive was started six days ago, we have recovered an average Rs 1 crore to Rs 1.5 crore per day.”The civic body has hired six music bands that had been playing in different wards of the city to help recover pending property tax. The response had been so good that the PMC is planning to continue the drive throughout the year.Property tax is one of the main sources of revenue for the civic body. PMC’s target for the financial year 2013-14 is Rs 750 crore in the form of property tax. So far Rs 550 crore has already been collected. The property tax department of PMC handles billing and collection of property tax from residential, commercial and other types of properties either privately or government owned. Property tax also includes basic basic house building tax and service tax such as street tax, scavenging tax etc. Citizens who pay their taxes by May 31 get a 10% discount.7.5 lakh property owners of the city are liable to pay the property tax. Among these there are owners of residential, commercial and open plots.
