A meeting of the civic body took place at the Annamalai University yesterday and there it was decided that the owners of endangered and earthquake prone buildings must take steps to repair their buildings. A digital mapping project of such buildings will be implemented shortly.Even the corporation &#8216; s own buildings like BRN Garden apartment buildings in Broadway are decrepit and run down. The corporation had been unable to repair these buildings or take precautionary measures to ensure the safety of the dwellers because of the monsoons. The notice which will be sent under the Chennai City Municipal Corporation Act will eventually ensure that these buildings are repaired and they do not cause any harm to the people who live in or around these buildings.In 2001 Chennai was designated as a Hazard III (greater vulnerability) zone. A study conducted by the Anna University found on soil analysis from different parts of the city that unconsolidated sediments and clay were likely to magnify the effects of an earthquake in the areas of T.Nagar, Purasawalkam, Egmore, Villivakkam, Siruvallur, Anna Nagar, Koyambedu, Vepery, Otteri, Vyasarpadi, Kolathur, Taramani, Arumbakkam, Ayanavaram, Kodambakkam and parts of Velachery.The city has around 11 lakh properties which include special, ordinary and multi-storied buildings. A survey was conducted by the Annamalai University on medium to tall buildings in the city.On Thursday the CCMC received the data from an Annamalai University survey that used web applications to determine the seismic vulnerability of buildings in 192 sq km within the city. This was the first phase of the survey.
