According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bharatestates.com\/blog\/what-is-credai\/\">CREDAI<\/a> Chairman Lalit Kumar Jain, the nationwide ban implemented by NGT on the mining of sand from river beds is adding to the ever increasing burden on the real estate industry and something must be done to contain it.Jain said that the NGT is entirely mistaken in thinking that the mining of sand from river beds causes floods. In fact the mining of sand from river beds functions as silting and helps in preventing floods by making free flow of the river easier.Jain said that the ban may serve the populist purpose but it is a retrogressive move as it is pulling back the nation&#8217;s development. Sand is a very essential material required for construction of buildings and a ban on obtaining it must not be implemented without discussing the issue with or giving an opportunity to the concerned parties like the developers who are to be greatly affected by the ban. Jain also said, &#8220;The ban will also increase result in sand smuggling add to the growth of sand mafia, instead curbing it. One most important point that one has to remember is that plaster quality particularly in urban areas and coastal cities like Mumbai is worsening by the day because of non availability of quality river sand. It is common knowledge that the use of sand mine with mud and pollutants from the creek is adversely affecting the quality of construction&#8221;.The ban on sand mining will not only delay constructions it will also increase the price of construction three times as the shortfall of sand has to be filled up by importing sand from Cambodia and Pakistan. Not just the realty sector but also the infrastructure sector will be affected by the ban as sand is required for construction of metro projects, power stations and rapid transit systems.
