A good office environment? Surely. But how do you define a good office environment? There are many variants and definitions. Let&#8217;s take up office floor plan.There can be various types of office floor plans. One of them is the open office floor plan. As the name suggests it is an open plan where all employees sit on the same plane or floor irrespective of departmental difference. They are given the same amount of space, same furniture and same opportunities to work. The open office plan emerged out of the idea of increasing employee interaction and unity. In an open office plan it is rather hard to avoid anyone for too long and constant interaction means better exchange of information. Also the absence of walls saves a lot of space and allows more light and natural ventilation on the floor.But open office plans have their own set of disadvantages. Like too much interaction. In a closed office plan, which comes with walls that divide workers, there can often be a complete lack of interaction among the employees of different departments. But at least while the HR department is doing something important which requires quietness and concentration, the sales team can have a furious brainstorming session of what new policies to adopt without disturbing anyone. Apart from this in open floor plan there will be the incessant ringing of phones, pinging of social sites, people talking, a variety of scents and buzz. While an open office plan could be an advantage for managers and new employees who are looking to socialize, it can be a nightmare to employees, especially those whose who work better in a quite environment.This may convey to some that the preferable office layout plan is a closed office plan. But even that is not the best plan as it induces isolation. Sometimes giving people less privacy keeps them from drifting and doing irrelevant things at office or going through social networking sites and Youtube.So the best office floor plan is one that encourages both interaction and isolation. Thought this may sound like a major paradox, it is possible.What you have to do is create an efficient work space. Every employee really does not need to know every other person. So employees who work are related or who need face-to-face communication with each other to work.Every department has not got to be harassed by the group discussions of every other department. There should be a separate meeting or conference room where people can have a brainstorming session or even argue loudly if they want without disturbing anyone.There should be separate communal spaces. Employees are not robots and they might feel the need to walk around or talk even to refresh their minds and work better. Therefore it is better to have a communal room. While others who are working will not be disturbed by an occasional chit chat, the work place will not be reduced to fascist austerity.Most employers prefer an open office plan over a closed one as it is a better way of having access t o all the employees. But while designing the office space it is better to keep the employees&#8217; convenience in mind rather than that of the administration. Employees all over the world have agreed that open plan work spaces make them less productive and often edgy due to the constant noise. Introverts who would have otherwise outshone everyone cannot even think in such an environment.
