One such place in Mumbai is Crawford Market. It is a famous market place situated opposite to Mumbai Police headquarters, north of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) Railway Station and at the western side of J. J. Flyover in South Mumbai. This market was called Crawford Market as it is named after the first Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai, Arthur Crawford but after India got independance the name has been changed and officially it is called Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai. Mahatma Jyotiba Phule was a maharashtrian Social Reformer and to give the market his name Mr. Mukundraoji Bhujbal Patil, the president of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Smarak Samiti had to put a lot of efforts.The main building of the market was donated by Cowasji Jehangir. The building of the market is built in the year 1869 but the business started in the year 1871. You may not know the fact that this was the first building in entire country to be lit by electricity and it was the time of 1882.The architect who designed this market was a British named William Emerson. He used Norman as well as Flemish architectural styles to design the market in late nineteenth century. When you come to this place at the entrance you see some frescos (wall paintings) and murals portraying Indian farmers in working pose. When you enter the building you see a beautiful stone fountain. This fountain was designed by Lockwood Kipling. He was the father of famous novelist Rudyard Kipling. This popular market is spread over an area of 24000 sq ft while the building of market covers 6000 sq ft. Coarse buff coloured Kurla stone along with red stone of Bassein was used to construct the building structure. To light up the market naturally a fifteen meter high Skylight canopy is built here. There is a huge clock tower adorned with intricate Victorian style carvings in the market.It is a market of wholesale traders selling fresh fruits, vegetables and poultry. At the one end of market you get to see a big pet store where you can buy dogs, cats or birds of different breeds. Sometimes rare endangered species of animals and birds are also on offer illegally.
