The name of this church is also connected to the war country. It is known as Afghan Church which is a church of St. John Evangelist. Built in the British period by British this church is located at Navy Nagar of Colaba area in the southern part of Mumbai city. The purpose to build this Presbyterian Church was to honour the soldiers died in the deadly First Afghan War which happened in the year 1838. This war brought the biggest ever defeat to the British empire but the loss was borne not only by British but also by other armies who fought on behalf of British in this War.Thus British built this church and named it Afghan Church in the memory of the Bombay Army, Madras Army as well as Maharaja Ranjit Singh\u2019s Army from Lahore.Initially built as a small thatched chapel which had no chairs and devotees had to bring their own chairs if they want to sit but later on shifted to a land given by Government on the condition that the spire of the church will serve as a landmark for the ships coming to the harbour and the height of the spire should be such that it could be viewed from a distance.The first structure of the church was built at the south of INHS Ashvini Naval Hospital while the current church is situated at the Navy Nagar. The church is designed by engineer Henry Conebeare. In the year 1847 his designed church was approved by higher authorities to go further. The architectural style used to design the church is gothic style. The other parts of church like reredos, the memorial Mosaics, the tiles, pews, screens, etc. were designed by another architect of that time known as William Butterfield. This ancient memorial structure of the church was created using the locally available basalt and limestone but the tiles of the floor were brought in all the way from England.Even the eight bells of the bell tower were also imported from Taylor Bell foundry of England in the year 1904. The length of the church is 50 feet, width is 27 feet while the height of spire is 198 feet. Like other British churches this church also has the beautiful stained glass work in its windows. These were consecrated (blessed) on 7th January 1985 by Bishop Harding. It took Rs. 565000 to build the spire of the church and this amount was solely arranged by Sir Cowasji Jahangir along with his own contribution of Rs. 7500. The beautiful tall standing spire of the church has an illuminated clock installed in it.The structure was in the state of extreme neglect but recently government has declared it as Grade I Heritage Structure and a fund of Rs. 30 lakh were approved for its restoration and renovation work. Few weekly masses as well as prayers are organised at the church. The Saint Germaine Foundation expressed their interest in the restoration work and to use the place for organising meetings and prayers.
