The elevation of Colaba Causeway is 4 metres.The fort area of Mumbai city in the early nineteenth century became overcrowded as the island of Colaba was completely used as cantonment area in 1976. Thus civilians couldn’t build their homes there. After several deaths due to capsizing of overcrowded boats a need to build a cause way felt strongly. Thus a Causeway was constructed by British East India Company and the construction completed in the year 1838. After the construction of causeway Colaba was reachable only in low tide but soon the rapid development of the area changed the things.Cotton exchange was established in the year 1844 at Cotton Green helped in the growth of the area. The causeway was further expanded in 1861 and 1863. Initially horse drawn tram cars were used for transportation in the area in 1873.Currently there are various shops, hotels, movie theatres, restaurants in Colaba Causeway. Mostly visited by shopping enthusiasts this suburban shopping destination offers you all types of apparel, electronic goods, music items, artefacts, shawls, carpets, minor antiques, varieties of slippers, cosmetics, jewellery, crystals, brass items, incense, clothes, handicrafts, Indian as well as imported expensive items at its numerous shops.
