One such place is famously known as Churchgate located in the southern part of Mumbai in the state of Maharashtra. This area is now called Veer Nariman Street. You might be wondering why this place is named Churchgate, actually there are two reasons behind that. the first one is there is a church in the area known as St. Thomas Church and secondly this area has a Railway Station known as Churchgate Station. So you can assume that it has borrowed the name Churchgate from them. But if you want to go into the history of the name then let me tell you that the story of its name dates back to eighteenth century.The area is housing a church as I told you earlier situated just five hundred meters from the Railway station. That is where it got its first name Church and the second part Gate is derived from a gate which was once situated at the same spot where currently Flora Fountain is located. Initially Mumbai city was a walled city until mid nineteenth century which means a wall was built around the city and three gates were constructed. Among these three gates one was located at Flora Fountain spot. This gate was later removed when the city was expanded. Now you must have understood why this place was known as Churchgate.The Churchgate Railway station is a famous terminus along with being the headquarters of Western Railway. It is one of the oldest as well as busiest railway stations of the city of Mumbai. This station is the starting point of many trains. Churchgate area is the address of many important commercial buildings, banking and business organisations. Apart from these Churchgate area also houses many prestigious educational institutions. The area is quite popular among tourists and several bollywood movies were shot here. If you talk about the attractions here then I must inform you that the famous Elephants Caves are situated here.These caves are ancient Buddhist caves and significant historic monuments. Another attraction is Gateway of India which needs no introduction to anyone. The Rajabhai Tower is another significant place in Churchgate. If want to know about the nearby attractions then the Premier Central Business District Nariman Point is quite close to Churchgate and worth paying a visit. Marine Drive which is a three kilometres extremely beautiful stretch known as Queen\u2019s Necklace at the coastal line of Arabian Sea is also in the close vicinity of Churchgate and worth exploring. Flora fountain is another heritage structure worth paying a visit.Apart from these worth exploring attractions Churchgate also houses Business Centre of Mumbai , university of Mumbai, Jai Hind College, Government Law College, Sydhenam College of Economics and Commerce, K.C.
