This theatre is one of the best theatres not only in Mumbai but also in country. let me brief you on how this theatre is established.Actually the legend and the pioneer of Indian Cinema Prithvi Raj Kapoor was keenly interested not only in cinema but also in theatres. He started a theatre group with 150 people in the year 1944 and named it Prithvi Theatre. This was a travelling theatre that travelled from place to place and staged various dramas. The first theatre work of the group was ‘Shakuntala’. The group presented a total of 2662 plays in total. It was the dream of Prithvi Raj Kapoor to set up a permanent theatre and tried to materialise his dream but unfortunately things couldn’t happen until his death. His youngest son Shashi Kapoor and his wife Jennifer bought a land and opened the Prithvi Theatre on 5th november 1978. The architect who designed and built the theatre was Ved Segan under the close guidance of Jennifer Kapoor.The Prithvi theare serves as a platform for the art of theatre and creativity. Till now many well established actors have performed here and many have started their career from this prominent place. Prithvi Theatre encouraged Hindi dramas in a time when english theatre was on top. This theatre has seen rough time as well. Many part time performers, directors as well as artists got chance in Prithvi Theatre to showcase their skills, styles and talents by different experiemnets.Jennifer Kapoor’s contribution is immense as she dedicated most of her time to make Prithvi Theatre a success. The efforts put by Kapoors later on saw the results and today it is recognised as a creative genius in the field of theatre and drama. Currently it is managed by Sanjana Kapoor and Kunal Kapoor the children of Jennifer Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor. They took charge of the theatre since 1984 the year their mother died. High standards are maintained and various shows are staged and hosted here in the Prithvi Theatre. Sanjana Kapoor has come up with new concept of ‘Little Prithvi Players’ in which she is bringing in little children for dramas and theatre art.
