And to refresh between the two weeks we get the weekend which is I guess sufficient to rejuvenate our body, mind and soul. In an attempt to find a perfect location for refreshing I got to know about Bassein Beach. This magnificent serene beach is located on the western coast of state of Maharashtra and about 77 kilometres from Mumbai. This place may remind you the hot and popular beaches of Goa. But the difference is that unlike Goa Bassein Beach is not over crowded and you get to enjoy your moment here as it is quite calm here. To reach the Bassein Beach you need to travel about an hour from Bassein Road Railway Station. If you are interested in exploring Bassein apart from relaxing at the tranquil beach then let me add to your joy that this place is quite significant from historic as well as religious point of view.This place was once a Ship building centre in the early seventeenth century. Portuguese used to rule here at that time. They have built forts in the dense forests and several churches around in order to fulfil their religious and spiritual requirements. But most of their creations are now in the shape of ruins. The remains on the fort can still be explored in the interiors of thickets of brushwood and palm grooves. It was unfortunate for the Portuguese that Marathas overpowered them and captured the place from them in the year 1739. You may be surprised to know that the local folks here in this village know how to cook Portuguese food and if you want you can try it.If you are religiously inclined there are some destinations that might interest you as well. Just ten kilometres from Bassein situated Nalasopara which is said to be the birth place of Lord Buddha in his previous life. You can find Buddhist relics here. This place is also said to be the capital region of Konkan from 1500 BC to 1300 AD. Apart from this there are few other spots to explore and these are Vajreshwari temple, Satguru Nityanand Maharaj Samadhi Mandir located at Ganeshpuri, Bhimeshwar temple, Akholi Hot spring, etc. Vajreshwari temple and the Akholi Hot Spring both located at an hour drive from Bassein.The beach is a perfect relaxing and picnicking destination for you and your family or friends. Just talking a leisurely walk on the beach with musical waves on one side and palm grooves on the other side is worth enjoying in the cool breeze from the sea. Just be a kid for some time and create your fort with the white silvery sand of the beach. Believe me it is worth trying.
