The new of the new property tax system has shocked most of the religious people. The new property tax rates have encouraged protests in the religious people.The Municipal Corporation has issued notices to such religious places asking them to pay the property taxes for the shrines. The Shrines which received notices are Jama Masjid in Zaveri Bazaar and Bhukha Behram Well in Churchgate. The most probable tax assigned for the well might be valued at Rs 1 crore. Whereas the Hanif Nalkhande from the Jama Masjid Trust said that you can\u2019t charge current market value to a property which is centuries old.A fire temple in Princess Street will have to pay the tax around Rs 60 lakh which they used to pay only about Rs 12000. Don Bosco Society from Wadala manages Don Bosco Shrine has asked to pay revised taxes. Most of the religious places have the commercial shops in their premises and some have residential premises which are given on the rent.Government property tax rule mostly spare religious places from the taxes but if the premises of the religious places are used for the commercial purposes then those places are ruled out of the exemption of the taxes.Some trusts have decided to obey the new tax system and will pay their taxes accordingly but other trust feeling that the taxes are unfair, has decided to come together against the new tax system.
