The Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee (MHCC) on 9th May proposed guidelines that are in keeping with 2003 MMRDA proposal.The MHCC drafted a proposal which might soon be approved by the BMC in a week\u2019s time. The proposal suggests that all the buildings in the area should be between ground plus three and seven storeys tall. For better execution of the suggested maintenance of uniformity, the Marine Drive precinct has been divided into five sub precincts according to color and design of the original buildings. The buildings have to stick to their present height and color even after any redevelopment. Roads will also be restricted from widening as the buildings have come up following a grid pattern. Widening of roads will damage the pattern and the fa\u00e7ade of the buildings.This is an effort to maintain the Marine Drive skyline. Other guidelines for the buildings have also been set such as buildings should have a fixed color scheme. Windows should only have glass in wooden frames and no aluminum or metal frames will be allowed. Balconies should be enclosed and there should be no glass fa\u00e7ades. These guidelines are all set to maintain the quality and character of the buildings in the famous shoreline. According to MHCC Chairman V. Ranganathan Marine Drive has the second largest number of art-deco buildings in the world and ranks right after Miami.The recommendations come in the wake of residents having filed a case with the HC against BMC for allowing a 14 storey building to come up on A-road in Churchgate. Tall buildings will very easily demolish the glory of the beautiful Precinct.The MHCC has also recommended a ban on street parking and will allow parking only in the basements.
