Let me take you to one such place which is extremely popular among the Marathis especially ladies. This place is known as Tulsi Baug. Always full of crowd this place situated at the heart of city is famous for its shopping area. The exact location of Tulsi Baug is opposite to Vishrambaug Wada near popular shopping area of Laxmi Road. The Swargate area is just three kilometers from Tulsi Baug. You can easily reach Tulsi Baug from three different roads that are Bajirao Road, Laxmi Road and connecting road of Shanipur to Chhatrapati Shivaji Road. The place is known for its shops of women&#8217;s items, gift articles, household items, metal ware, Traditional Maharashtrian wares, cookery items, cosmetics, artificial jewellery, Pooja items, etc.Tulsi Baug means Basil Garden but do not go with the literary meaning as there is no basil garden here. There is a Tulsibaug Wada situated in the area and thus this market has got its name as Tulsi Baug. Apart from its reasonable market, this place is also frequented by devotees of Lord Ram because it has many prominent temples in its vicinity like Ram Temple, Ganpati Temple, Shankar Temple, etc. This place has flourished in the Peshwa regime. Women love this place as they get all the required items for their home, parties as well as for themselves here that too at a reasonable bargaining price. Though it is overly crowded but mostly with women shoppers. It is a sort of paradise for middle class women of Pune. Fancy makeup kits, daily care products, bangles, bindis, ponytails, imitation jewellery, bentex jewellery, footwear, cosmetics, fashion items, handbags, hosiery products, kids wears, linens, kitchen utensils, brass and metal idols, various household items like iron stands, crockery, Pooja items, etc. are some of the items sold here. The list is too long. You name it and you get it. You just need to be strong enough to stand in a crowded place and shop. This busiest market of Pune gives you a chance to experience the traditional shopping.Now come to the other side of this place. The famous Ram Temple situated in Tulsi Baug was established in the year 1761. It was built by Shrimant Naro Apaji Tulsibaugwale who was a nobleman in the royal court of Peshwas. You can see the impressive images of Ram, Sita and Laxman in the Sanctum of the temple. These idols, created by Umajibaba Pandharpurkar, were placed here in November 1765. Later on in the year 1767 another image is added to the already existing ones and this was the image of Lord Hanuman sculpted by Bakhataram Patharvat Gujarathi. After that some more idols were installed in the temple and these were Lord Ganapati and Goddess Parvati in the year 1781. The idols in the temple are adorned with expensive gold, silver, pearl and diamond jewellery. The small temple of Hanuman is situated in front of Ram, Temple. Ram&#8217;s best devotee Hanuman is in a posture of bowing down to lord Rama with both his hands together. The idol of Hanuman is made of black stone.The intricately carved temple of Ram is a significant religious place today for devotees and good number of people visits it daily. It took many years to complete the temple and thus the cost shoot up to Rs. 1, 36,667 in that time. Along with the temple a big Wada was also created for the residence of family members of Naro Apaji. There are some other temples also in the area like Ganesh (Moreshwar) Temple, Vitthal Temple, Rukmini Temple, Dattatray, Maruti temple, etc. I personally feel that Indians love religious places and it is impossible to find a single place in India where there is no holy shrine. Salute to the spirituality of Indians.
