Let’s look why: A resident in Marol who lives in a 300 sq ft house (that costs around 1 crore) paid a tax of about Rs 13,900 while a resident of a 10,000 sq ft flat at Colaba (that costs around 12 crore) paid Rs 5200. What can be the answer to this miscalculation? Thus the reaction of the residents sparked with anger resulting into an outrage that includes around 35,000 housing societies and multiple NGO’s.NGOs like Watchdog Foundation, SOUL, the Bombay Catholic Sabha and Federation of Housing Societies also participated along with people against the civic body. It is asked from the authority to bring back the old method of calculating property tax because people are upset with the new system that is faulty and unacceptable. The mass agitators also decided go on 1-day hunger strike at Azad Maidan before April.
