The rapid pace of urbanization has lead to shortage of reasonably priced housing projects in urban areas. To bring focus on this issue, Union Minister for Housing and Poverty Alleviation, Ajay Maken held a conference currently in Mumbai. The issue was discussed in context to mega cities like Mumbai and Delhi but the issue was also related to Pune, which is against the conditions of the Centre of Policy Research draft report.In the meeting organized by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Ajay Maken said that almost 50% of Mumbai population dwells in slum. In Delhi, even though 84% of people are homeless but they are self-employed and contribute towards the economic growth. They are vital part of Indian urbanization; therefore it is necessary to create affordable houses even in the posh localities of the prime cities. He also added that it is essential to bridge the gap between the service providers and service consumers even there is a need to review the FSI policy and make better arrangements for affordable housing projects.According to a research, in 2012 there was a shortage of approximately 18.78 million homes for the economically weaker section of the society. Though the economical housing projects launched by the private developers have extensively declined the shortage of housing projects by almost 25% in past five years. This makes the point clear that developers can appreciably take up the challenges of the growing urbanization. The active participation of the developers can transform the situation, encountered due to urban development.According to a speaker in a training programme organized by CREDAI, private builders play a pivotal role to catering the needs of the urban Indian population, in which almost 65% of population is below the age group of 35 years. It is also important that the economy should focus on the rising needs of this populace. Technology can help a lot for the development process. In fact CREDAI in association with Pune Metro and National Skill Development Corporation have come up with an initiative called Kushal that will help in upgrading the skills of the construction workers in Pune.According to a report, the rapid development in Tier I and Tier II cities will lead to substantial shortage of labor. This will lead the construction industry to go in for large-scale mechanization and also project management.
