It is up to you whether you want to choose a historic place, natural place or a modern entertainment centre. Today I will take you to one of most important historical places. It is on every explorers list. The name of this small place is Belur which is situated at the Yagachi River banks. It is also called as Bayluru or Baylore in Karnataka. According to the inscriptions found here Belur was also called Velapuri. This small town of Belur comes under Hassan district of Karnataka state. You may be surprised to know that Belur is famous as Banaras of South and thus called Dakshin Varanasi. This place is popular for a beautiful historic temple known as Chennakeshwa temple built by Hoyasala dynasty. By the first look at the impressive temple structure you can imagine the architectural skills of Hoysala. Belur was one of the capitals of the Hoyasala dynasty. The Chennakeshwa temple which is the main tourist attraction in Belur is dedicated to god Chennakeshwa who is the main deity in the temple. Chennakeshwa is another name of Lord Vishnu and it means handsome Vishnu. The main temple is surrounded by another temple which was created by King Vishnuvardhana’s wife queen Shantaladevi. This temple is known as Kappe Chennigraya. The finest craftsmanship of people at that time is clearly visible in the intricate carvings and figurines in the temple. You can see a line of lookalike elephants around the temple. All elephants are beautifully decorated with garlands of pearls and other ornaments made up of stone. The main temple was created by King Vishnuvardhana in the year 1117 CE. He created this impressive temple in order to mark his victory over Cholas at Talakad. The king couldn’t complete this temple in his lifetime as it took almost hundred and three years to build this great temple and thus his grandson named Veera Ballala II finished the work of temple. The beauty of the temple lies in its intricately carved sculptures, animal figures like elephants, lions, horses, etc. you can not notice a single spot on the structure that is not carved or beautified. Various events from Indian mythological epics and Shilabalikas (dancers) in dancing positions can also be seen carved on the walls. Not only the outside structure but also the interiors of the temple are also finest example of craftsmanship of Hoysala dynasty. The pillars inside the temple are beautifully designed by stone carvings. The main attraction in the temple is the sculpture of The Lady with the Mirror (Darpan Sundari) carved on walls. You can see every minor detail of the figure clearly and the beauty of the lady makes sense. Most of the sculptures in the temple are built by Jakanachari. Apart from the main temple there are two more holy shrines here. one of them is called Pushkarni which is actually a step well situated at the right side of the main entrance and the other is shrine situated at the entrance is the Rayagopuram created in Dravidian style by Vijayanagar Kings at the main entrance. They worshipped this deity as their family god or Kuladevata.Timings of templeThe temple is open to public from 7.30 am till 8.00 pm everyday but the inner chamber where the main deity is situated is closed from 10.00 am to 11.00 am, 1.00 pm to 3.00 pm and 5.00 pm to 6.15 pm.This temple is a proposed UNESCO world heritage site. Hassan is the nearest rail head situated at 40 kilometers. Nearest airport is Bangaluru Airport.Distance of Belur from various places:Bangaluru – 222 kilometersHalebid – 16 kilometersHassan – 40 kilometersMangalore – 124 kilometers RUCHI MAHAJANзайм на карту без отказов круглосуточновзять кредит онлайн

Karnataka: There are many excursion places around Bangaluru which can make a perfect weekend getaway.
