These lavish houses are the true piece of workmanship.<strong>History of the Chettinad Architecture:<\/strong>The most important aspect of the Chettinad style house is the amalgamation of the traditional Indian architecture with the European style. History says that the Nattukotai Chettiyars, a banking community who had businesses in South East Asia brought teak from Burma to build a house type that came to be known as the Chettinad House.<strong>Architectural Layout of a typical Chettinad Home:<\/strong>The Chettinad mansions basically have wide spaces, high ceilings and the courtyards. \u00a0The houses are built on rectangular plots .The simple floor plan of a Chettinad house consists of the courtyard for guests, rooms on either side for conducting business meetings. The courtyards are used for performing rituals and had raised seating area at one or both ends. The courtyard is illuminated by natural lighting and is lined with the beautifully carved pillars. The front door is thick with three layered teak wood frame and intricate carving. \u00a0A series of double rooms are located at the main courtyard for sleeping, storage and prayers. There is also a small courtyard behind which is meant for cooking and socializing for the female members of the family.The Chettinad houses generally had only one floor and mud roofing slabs. Later these houses started having two floors to accommodate more guests. The furniture is more of an antique type made of teak wood. The flooring has black and white tiles, the chess- board style. Though building the exact mansion is not practically possible due to the space constraints and cost factor but we can adapt the interior or the elements of this style.&nbsp;<strong>Furniture:<\/strong> To give your home a Chettinad look, go for the Chettinad style furniture. The furniture is made of Burma teak and woven with cane. The shape of the furniture helps to recline and is very comfortable.<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bharatestates.com\/blog\/significance-of-doors-in-interior-decoration\/\" target=\"_blank\">Door<\/a>: <\/strong>It isbasically a wooden door and is available in various designs and patterns. It is made of durable wood which has perfect finish and shine.<strong>Pillars:<\/strong> If you have enough space then you can have Chettinad style pillars. The pillars can be of rosewood. The pillars generally have mythical sculptures.<strong>Flooring: <\/strong>The Athangudi tiles are the typical Chettinad Style <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bharatestates.com\/blog\/is-the-wooden-flooring-right-for-your-home\/\" target=\"_blank\">flooring<\/a>. The designs are normally chess-board style. The most traditionally used colors are yellow or red with the typical floral and diamond borders.<strong>Artifact: <\/strong>You can also decorateyour home with the traditional Chettinad style artifacts<strong>. <\/strong>They offer you exquisite and impeccable array of beautiful artifacts and brassware. There are unique range of brass statues, lamps, bells, shells, antique pictures, and traditional Indian teak swings.There are some interior designers who are incorporating the Chettinad style architecture in modern homes as well.
