It is the Big Banyan Tree situated at Ramohalli. You must be wondering that I am talking about a tree to visit. Yes my dear friends it is indeed a tree but not just any tree but a very special one and the site is worth investing time to widen your knowledge. The Big Banyan Tree is also called Dodda Alada Mara in local Kannada language. It is located in a village called Ramohalli which is situated near Kengeri on the Mysore Road in Karnataka. The distance from Bengaluru to Big Banyan Tree is 28 kilometers.Let me tell you some facts about the Banyan Tree. It may help you to imagine the significance of this grand tree.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Banyan tree is the national tree of India.<\/li>\n<li>It lives for years and years if not cut.<\/li>\n<li>It is given its name Banyan Tree by Portuguese who usually saw Baniya (traders) community people taking rest under the tree while on travel for trading purpose.<\/li>\n<li>The Banyan trees expand by reaching its hanging roots (vertical root system) to the ground.<\/li>\n<li>The Banyan tree is believed to be spiritual and worshiped by Indians as a holy tree.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Big Banyan tree near Bengaluru is special because it is four century old. Yes, you heard me right it is 400 years old and being a single tree spread over an area of 3 acres which means 12000sqm. There is no other tree like this in the country. It is the largest tree in Karnataka state and fourth largest in the country. The Big Banyan Tree near Bengaluru is the location of many movies.This tree is expanding its crown circumference by two to three feet every year.\u00a0 The ground is covered in such a manner by the roots of the tree that it seems like a magnificent mini forest. Some part of the popular Hindi movie Sholay was filmed here. This tree has seen the Bengaluru city growing into hi-tech city. Several birds have built their nests in the tree while the fruits of the tree attract monkey packs.Initially neglected this tree is now declared a heritage tree by the government and steps are being taken to keep it healthy and forever. It is found that the soil composition under the tree is as it is as it was four centuries back. Now you can sight researchers and botanists doing research here for hours and hours to know how a tree can live for such a long period of time as it is the oldest tree species in entire city. The surrounding areas including Savanadurga monolithic hill and Manchanabele reservoir makes the place more serene and worth spending time.The horticulturists are surprised to see the growth of the tree even though the main trunk of it is absent. It is spreading continuously and currently more than thousand aerial roots can be seen. The local people believe that this tree is divine and sacred. Scientists have found that it absorbs suspended matters from air and it does photosynthesis even in the night thus giving out more oxygen than other trees. Proper walkways are built under the tree in order to facelift the place and safeguard tree from careless visitors. Shadow gardens will be created like Japanese Gardens to make the place more attractive and inviting.No doubt it is a perfect picnic spot for all ages whether young or senior to spend some pleasant time under one of the largest trees. It is the heritage of our country so one should always respect it and should not try to destroy or harm it any ways. People do carving or scratching on the roots and branches of the tree.
