It is because of great Saint named Sai Baba who appeared on a day in Shirdi from nowhere and lived here for rest of his life during the nineteenth century. He was actually a mysterious saint as no one knew who he is? Where he came from? What was his actual name and religion? Who were his parents? But one thing that everyone knew was that he was God in the form of saint. He had the powers to heal people’s wounds. Hindus and Muslims both followed him and called him Sai Baba. Today this small town has become one of the most popular and spiritual shrine for devotees in the Country as thousands of people come here not only from the country but from around the globe to get the blessings of Sai Baba who they believe is lively here.
Sai Baba is said to live in Shirdi for about fifty years. It is because of him that this otherwise a simple village became an important pilgrimage. The age of Sai Baba is said to be just sixteen years only when he was first noticed by villagers under a Neem tree.He is better known as the father of poor because he devoted all his life for the betterment of poor people and to heal their sufferings. His previous life till fifteen years of age was still a mystery along with his origin but people believe he is the incarnation of Lord Shiva. He led a very simple life like a saint and served the people. He died in the year 1918 leaving his devotees in deep grief. His Samadhi sthal is being built and a big temple is also built at the place he resided. You find here a beautiful temple with very powerful and lively idol of Sai Baba I white marble, a Dwarkamai place, Samadhi sthal, Gurusthan. Some of his belongings are still kept as it is here for visitors. The entire site just gives you feeling of presence of God so whenever you visit this divine place be very faithful and honest in paying your prayers and see the results. You will find the Baba in every nook and corner here smiling at you.
This spiritual place sees visitors from all economic levels, from all casts, from all states and foreign countries and each devotee is equally blessed by Baba as for him everyone is same and equally important. He always tried to teach people that God is only one. The names may be different. His mantra was “Have faith and be patient” (Shraddha and saburi). Outside the temple you will find shops lined up selling Sai Baba’s idols, photos, rings with Sai Baba’s picture, and other such articles. Most of the shops have the names starting from Sai. Eventhough the village is a small place but due to large number of visitors from around the world many luxury hotels are being built here to facilitate visitors.
Shirdi is now has sufficient infrastructure and well developed as an important pilgrimage. There is a helipad owned by Sai Baba Sansthan trust. If anyone wants to use it then permission from trust is required. Many VIPs use helicopter services to visit Shirdi. There is a railway station in Shirdi and shuttle service is being operated by trust for its guests. For better connectivity from other parts of country Manmad Railway station is there just 55 kilometers from Shirdi. Taxies, cabs and bus services are available here easily.
