Santiniketan located 163 km away from the north of Kolkata, had been made famous by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore who set up a school in Santiniketan where students can learn in a natural environment. Now the place is considered a cultural hub where the most notable festivals are basanta utsav, poush mela, Rabindra jayanti etc. Even apart from the festive times, visiting santiniketan at anytime can be worthwhile. There are beautiful buildings built during the time of Rabindranath himself such as Rabindra Bhavan, Santiniketan Griha, Dehali etc.
Hazarduari palace is located in Murshidabad district, 205 km away from Kolkata. It stands just beside the Bhagirathi River gently flowing beside it. Hazarduari used to the home of former nawabs of Bengal. It has been made into a museum and can be of immense entertainment to the old and the young alike.
Digha can also be considered as a picnic spot near Kolkata. The place is 187 km away from Kolkata and is the closest sea beach from the city. The white sand lined with casuarinas can make for an unforgettable sight. Like all sea beaches, Digha provides the usual entertainments such as swimming in the sea, playing in the sand, beautiful sunset and sunrise, horse rides by the sea etc.
Shankarpur is another sea beach located 14 km east of Digha. It is mostly known as a fishing beach and is more peaceful than Digha.
