Having a home library has always been looked upon as a luxurious interior design feature only the rich with big houses can afford. But to tell the truth, a home library is a great home decoration idea for anyone who has a passion for books or thinks they are classy objects that can add charm to a room.
First thing to keep in mind before designing a library is the amount of space that is available. If you have an entire room you want to design as a library then you will have much more lavish choices. You can create a cheerful mood by brightly painting the walls. If you want to give it a more serious mood, use darker colors. You can hang pictures on the walls, use interestingly patterned curtains, place tall vases or decorative lamps and statues made for room decoration. Floor to ceiling bookshelves look beautiful in library rooms. If you do not have enough books to fill up such big bookshelves place small classy showpieces on some shelves. Fill up the room with comfortable furniture on which you can curl up such an expansive sofa or bean bags. Rugs, warm, fuzzy carpets and cushions can add to the comfort factor.
If you have a part of a room or a very small space you want to turn into a library, make sure the space is least frequented part of the house and has a relaxing atmosphere. Designer bookshelves look best when only a limited amount of space is available.
Keeping the purpose of the library in mind will also prove useful. If you want make your library your office, somber, dark colored wooden furniture will be suitable. In a kind of library that you also want to use as a study a large table will be useful. If your library is in your living room, it should have more decorative and pretty books than knowledgeable ones.
Talking about books, types of books you keep in your library reflects your character. In this era of e-books, people do not buy real books as much as they used to. For simply decorative purposes, there is no need to be an avid reader. You can give your library a classic look by keeping leather bound books. Choose the title of these books carefully. Usually shelves full of Dickens, Austen, Hardy etc. look impressive and makes the home owner look smart. You can also go by the colors and gloss of the covers. Arranging the books according to authors or genre would be the norm of a library. But if you are trying for a more relaxed look arrange the books according to size or just create an interesting mix and match (but don’t mix the leather bound ones with glossy thrillers. There can be no mistake worse than this.)
Lighting is also very important in a library. In case you have a large window in the room with a window seat, make full use of it. Nothing is better than reading in natural light, sitting by a window with a view. In case you do not have access to such a luxury, place small lights all over the library space. Lighting the shelves with dimmers makes the books pop. Use table lamps and stand lamps as well.
